Far be it from us to rain on the parades of so many current and recovering theater kids, but we look upon NBC’s current trend of releasing live-televised versions of famous musicals with a truckload of skepticism. We mean, there was only one way to watch Allison Williams and Christopher Walken doing Peter Pan, and it wasn’t the good way.
It’s funny, then, that our hopes for Fox’s upcoming Grease: Live! have actually been buoyed by this little trailer featuring Julianne Hough as Sandy (nice), Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy (totally), and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo (perfect). Our pal Aaron Tveit surfaces as Danny and Scream Queens’ Keke Palmer is there, apparently, as Marty. This is all working for us. Jessie J is reportedly on board to open the show. Whether that means performing “Grease (Is the Word)” from the movie, we can’t say—but it’s interesting nonetheless.
Anyways, what we love here is the winky attitude and the fact that, if you think about it, Fox has a way better history with campy musical numbers (uh, Glee?) than NBC has with just about anything at this point (poor, poor NBC). We’re actually curious to see how this all shakes out when Grease: Live! airs on January 31 at 7 p.m.
